Who would have thought some of Turner's seascapes were drowned in sunlight?

The darkness and gloom surrounding the boat at sea give the impression of a moonlit scene.

Still, they are an excellent example of how lighting is all important in moonlit views.  Subtle shadows or stark contrast, full moon or poor lighting from a quarter moon or clouded skies, it is important to show direction of light consistently.

Beautiful effects are possible with dramatic or muted colour with light touching the tips of waves or rooves of buildings. Why not try taking a photograph and changing the view to a moonlit one? It is an interesting challenge. You will be surprised how closely you will need to study Turner's painting to obtain the effect.

Try it today.
