I started going to art classes when I retired, (early I hasten to add) some 20 years ago. My intention was to do watercolour landscapes. After a while I gave up in despair. After a while I tried again, simply to do watercolour. After a while I gave up in despair.

After a while I tried again.... I do find it possible to colour a drawing with watercolour and add definition with pen and ink. Which is not exactly what I have in my minds eye when I think of watercolour. On exploring other media I find I enjoy pastel. It has affinities with drawing, and you can use the wonderful colours produced by the manufacturers thus avoiding the complications that can ensue from mixing oil paints.

The wonderful thing about oil painting is the way it is possible to make alterations, to work at certain areas over again, indeed start all over again! At some classes it has proved great fun to use mixed media, including frottage and simple printing with the addition of ink, pastel and some collage. I still can’t do watercolour landscapes, indeed I no longer want to do so, there are so many other possibilities.
