let the world know your art works

Welcome to localartist.org.uk.  The purpose of this site is to enable artists of all levels to showcase their work in an environment that encourages them to contribute good quality material that otherwise would remain beyond view in private collections, often never seeing the light of day.

We are based in the United Kingdom, and although the central focus of the material is UK-based, we will be welcoming submissions from all over the world.

It Takes One to Know One?

How do you recognize an artists abilities? Does the mind of an artist work differently to that of the general viewer?

Artists appear to operate on a different level to those of us who study their works.

Some art is easy to interpret - obvious to most people who just want to appreciate something well-composed and easy on the eye.

Artists, however, need to exhibit something tonally even and with great depth; a work possibly composed of saturated colour, with impact to capture the attention. A new concept. A great many of us feel something upon observation of works of real quality; artists feel either an affinity or an absolute lack of it.

Brick Lane Galleries - Opportunities for Artists

If you are looking to exhibit in the New Year and start 2012 with an exciting opportunity, we are also launching new  dates for an Art in Mind exhibition from the 14 to 27 February 2012.

The Brick Lane Gallery is also happy to announce we will soon be launching a new website and new look, with major construction currently taking place. Our slick new gallery front and our fantastic Annexe are continuing to keep the status of The Brick Lane Gallery high with lots of surprises making it a must see spot on Brick Lane.

Try Something New

It can be frustrating when learning to paint to reach a stalemate with your progress.

Attempts at oils can run into trouble through a lack of patience with the time it takes for the canvas to dry before another layer may be applied without dislodging the previous one and becoming a muddy mess.

Acrylics can dry before you expect them to and the colours remain garish despite all endeavours to tone them down.

Pastelles insist on a refusal to co-operate and smudge after the work is complete making them difficult to store.

These are just examples of the brick walls an artist can come up against whilst learning the skills.

The Art of the Fantastic

During the time between the two world wars there came a period of introspection initiated by Sigmund Freud and psychoanalyst thought, greatly persuasive in the art world, particularly.

The main protagonist of the kind of art brought about by looking beyond the classical view of things was the French artist, Henri Rousseau (1844-1910). Surrealists who followed much later were inspired by his way of seeing the world as if in a dream-like state. His naive style was rather child-like but artists saw his fantastical images as thought-provoking and his sylization as another version of the real thing.

Using the Elements in Art

The four elements are well-known - Fire, Water, Air and Earth

In Art they may be interpreted thus:-

  • Fire - Desire, Heat, Re-birth, Torture, Inspiration
  • Water:- Emotion, Birth, Movement, Calm
  • Air:- Thought, Light, Peace, Turbulence
  • Earth:- Stability, Firmness, History, Growth
